Xi Jinping placed Taiwan at the centre of the table, calling it "the most important issue in China-US relations" and warning that mishandling it could put the entire bilateral relationship "in great jeopardy."

The equivocation continued on Air Force One: he acknowledged that Xi "feels very strongly" about opposing Taiwanese independence, yet maintained he had "made no commitment either way." He also revealed that a congressional-approved $11 billion arms package for Taiwan remained unsigned, offering only: "I may do it. I may not do it."

Taiwan's government responded on multiple fronts. President Lai Ching-te went further in a Sunday Facebook post, declaring Taiwan "will never be sacrificed or traded away." He outlined the people's core consensus — that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other, that sovereignty cannot be infringed, and that the island's future belongs to its people alone. Lai warned that destabilisation of the Taiwan Strait would reverberate through global supply chains and the world economy. Washington has not publicly responded.
