Ep.884: About Indonesia - Survival surfing: Indonesians riding the waves to beat tsunami trauma

Surfboard tucked under his arm, Dery Setyawan sprints into waves.

It is not just a physical challenge but an emotional one - most of his family and friends were swept to their deaths when a tsunami sparked by 9.3 magnitude quake killed more than 220,000 on December 26, 2004, with Indonesia the hardest stricken.

At his hometown Lampuuk, only 300 out of 7,000 residents survived. Setyawan remembers the water crashing into his home, dragging him some 200 meters till he hit some debris and clung on for his life.

In years following, the surviving residents were fearful of the water. But after the first anniversary of the disaster, Setyawan decided to face his fears. "Waves from the beach are our friends, the ones that killed people during the tsunami were from the deep ocean." he depicts.

Now a professional surfer, he has competed in international and domestic competitions, and aims to transform the shores from a place of despair to one of hope.

The government vehicles began appearing in Indonesian towns and cities in May, equipped with loudspeakers blaring a blunt message. "You can have sex. You can get married. But don’t get pregnant," health workers said.

Indonesian officials are worried about a possible unintended consequence of the country’s coronavirus restrictions:a post-pandemic baby boom.

In April, as people across Indonesia stayed home, about 10 million married couples stopped using contraception, according to the National Population and Family Planning Agency, which collects data from clinics and hospitals that distribute birth control.

Many women couldn’t get access to contraceptives because their health care provider was closed. Others did not want to risk a visit, for fear of catching the virus.

Hasto Wardoyo, who heads the family planning agency, has estimated that there could be 370,000 to 500,000 extra births early next year.
