Ep.K529: About Iceland - Why it’s perfectly normal to see baby puffins thrown off cliffs in Iceland each year

Watching thousands of baby puffins being tossed off a cliff is perfectly normal for the people of Iceland’s Westman Islands. The chicks of Atlantic puffins hatch in burrows on high sea cliffs.

When they’re ready to fledge, they fly from their colony and spend several years at sea until they return to land to breed. Pufflings have historically found the ocean by following the light of the moon.

Many residents of the Westman Islands spend a few weeks in August and September collecting wayward pufflings that have crashed into town after mistaking human lights for the moon.

Releasing the fledglings at the cliffs the following day sets them on the correct path.

Iceland recommends hugging trees instead of people

With countries imposing lockdown to block the spread of the virus, the Icelandic Forestry Service has taken a weird approach to the situation.

The Icelandic Forestry Service has asked citizens to hug trees and plants while maintaining social distancing. Forest rangers at Hallormsstaður National Forest in East Iceland are cleaning up the snow from roads so locals can go and hug trees.

"When you hug [a tree], you feel it first in your toes and then up your legs and into your chest and then up into your head," forest ranger Þór Þorfinnsson tells the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. "It’s such a wonderful feeling of relaxation and then you’re ready for a new day and new challenges."

Þorfinnsson recommends that not everyone should embrace the first tree they see; potential huggers should venture deeper into the forest.

Source article: https://features.ltn.com.tw/english/article/paper/1567879; https://features.ltn.com.tw/english/article/paper/1367430
