文法跟讀 In-Tense Ep.059: Transitive Verbs 及物動詞

· 文法跟讀單元 In-Tense

Welcome to 15mins.today the home of English Shadowing. I am your host Gavin, and this is InTense Episode 59. Well guys, we have started with verbs and we started with action verbs. Now action verbs are easy and they are divided into 2 parts transitive and Intransitive verbs.

Now what we're going to do today in this episode is just look at transitive verbs. Okay, and first let's start with what are transitive verbs? They are action verbs that have a direct object. “The dog ate the bone.” Your verb is ate, and what did it eat? The bone is the object for it to eat, but sometimes we just ask something like: “Who called?” There is no object, it’s just somebody called. When you answer, your answer might have another person like an object, “Oh, Mary called.” So now we know, right? So, we're going to be looking at transitive verbs. Now again do not panic at, the end of the day, all of these verbs, action verbs, linking verbs, transitive, intransitive, are not important, just as long as you can recognise what the verb is. What is the verb we're looking at? What is that thing? Oh, it's a verb. What's that? That's a noun. What is that? That's a pronoun.

As long as we can identify what it is, we don't really have to worry about its specifics, because you know, at the end of the day, when we speak, nobody is that specific unless you are into grammar in a major way. Okay, so we're going to be looking at transitive verbs today, and those are the action verbs that have an object, so most of the time we use those right? Yeah, “I rang the bell.” What did I ring? The bell, rang and the bell are connected there's your object. Okay, so let's do some examples and in this I will also be underlining them, in the script of course, so let's get started with our examples.

Did Jane write the email? Yes, she wrote the email.

Did Jane write the email? No, she did not write the email.

Did John book the room? Yes, he booked the room.

Did John book the room? No, he did not book the room.

Did Peter eat pizza? Yes, he ate pizza.

Did Peter eat pizza? No, he did not eat pizza.

Did James read the story? Yes, he read the story.

Did James read the story? No, he did not read the story.

Did Lisa paint a picture? Yes, she painted a picture.

Did Lisa paint a picture? No, she did not paint a picture.

Did you read the report? Yes, I read the report.

Did you read the report? No, I did not read the report.

Would you like a drink? Yes, I would like a drink.

Would you like a drink? No, I would not like a drink.

Is your phone broken? Yes, my phone is broken.

Is your phone broken? No, my phone is not broken.

Well there you go guys. Just a quick introduction to transitive action verbs. Again, don't worry about it, just be able to spot the verbs so you'll notice a lot of them. “Is your phone is broken?” The phone is the object, right? Anyway, keep practising and I will catch you in the next episode, bye!
